What does a typical inspection involve?
Testing of all sprinkler system alarm devices, flowing water through main drains and inspector's test connections, checking condition of fire department connection, exercising all main control valves, verifying supply of spare sprinkler heads and appropriate head wrench, visual inspection of all sprinkler heads for recalls, corrosion, paint, tape, damage, orientation and age, visual inspection of all exposed piping and hangers, visual inspection of sprinkler head coverage per NFPA 13, verifying condition of standpipe valves.

What is required of me during the inspection?
You will need to notify your alarm monitoring company to put the system in test mode. You will need to know what the silence/reset procedure for your alarm system is including any necessary passwords or codes. You should alert all occupants of the building that an alarm may sound at some point during the inspection. We will require access to all areas of the building, including locked and occupied rooms. In most cases, water will be flowed through system valves to the outside of the building. These discharge areas should be kept clear to allow for water to drain away and consideration should be taken to protect landscaping in all discharge areas.  Salting of parking lot and/or sidewalks may be required in freezing conditions.
